It was a really nice time to remember our babies during the holidays, meet members and be there as a group for each other last year and I hope it also will be this year. We will have a covered dish/ snack or dessert if you can bring. We made ornaments last year with each child’s name in them on everyone’s ornament so that is going to be a tradition. I have several different styles to choose to make but really want to make sure I have enough so if you could please let me know how many are coming that would be great. We will also release Chinese lanterns in memory of our Angels. Hope to see you there.

-----------

During the month of October, Tennessee is observing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) Awareness Month. Over the last decade, opioid use in the United States and Tennessee has rapidly increased, causing an alarming number of babies born with NAS, a set of withdrawal symptoms a newborn may experience as a result of prenatal exposure to prescription drugs or heroin.

To raise awareness about NAS in our community, we are asking individuals to wear Pearls and Bowties for Babies on Friday, October 6. There are over 40 organizations from Bristol to Memphis participating in this campaign! MDC encourages you to invite your family, friends and coworkers to participate and post their photos on social media using the hashtag #NASMonthTN. Have some fun with your posts! Take pictures as an office staff, get creative with your bowties or even have your pets and babies in the picture! The options are limitless!

A suggested post could be as simple as, "A baby's life shouldn't begin with detox. I'm wearing my pearls/bowtie today to support NAS awareness in TN. #NASMonthTN"

We look forward to seeing your photos on Friday, October 6! Thank you for joining us in creating a healthy and safe community, free of substance abuse.

Special thank you to all of our fantastic media partners helping us spread the message! Star 102.1 Your #1 Hit Music Station, Q100 Country, WATE 6 On Your Side, WBIR Channel 10 and WVLT Local 8. We appreciate all of your support!

Help...Hope...Healing 2017

08/03/17

8AM - 4PM

Do you envision a world where differences are the norm and a healthy brain is just as important as a healthy body? So do we! Join our community to bring about a change in our culture, to eradicate stigma, and promote the inclusion of people with lived expertise in all aspeacts of our daily life.

Many of us come face-to-face every day with those who are in need or at-risk in our schools and communities. These individuals and their families are often working through many life issues that lead them to challenges like alcohol, substance abuse, grief, depression, school, peer group, and behavioral issues... even thoughts of suicide. Sometimes, no matter how much we care and really want to help, we just don’t know what to do.

This conference is designed to provide valuable information and training to help caring professionals and community members, like you, become equipped to help these individuals and families. You can help them overcome and meet these challenges head on so that they can move on to happy, healthy and productive futures.

Community Screening of Generation Found

03/21/17

Metro Drug Coalition is bringing the groundbreaking documentary Generation Found back to Knoxville. Tickets are $11 and we must have 65 individuals requesting tickets by March 7 before we can confirm the showing. Simply visit http://gathr.us/screening/19594 to reserve your ticket today. Your card will not be charged until we have 65 people interested!
Film synopsis: From the creators of The Anonymous People comes GENERATION FOUND, a powerful story about one community coming together to ignite a youth addiction recovery revolution in their hometown. Devastated by an epidemic of addiction, Houston faced the reality of burying and locking up its young people at an alarming rate. And so in one of the biggest cities in America, visionary counselors, law school dropouts, aspiring rock musicians, retired football players, oil industry executives, and church leaders came together to build the world’s largest peer-driven youth and family recovery community. Independently filmed over the course of two years, GENERATION FOUND takes an unprecedented and intimate look at how a system of treatment centers, sober high schools, alternative peer groups, and collegiate recovery programs can exist in concert to intervene early and provide a real and tested long-term alternative to the “War on Drugs.” It is not only a deeply personal story, but one with real-world utility for communities struggling with addiction worldwide.
Following the film, we will be doing a Q&A session with the community, local officials, educators, and treatment professionals on Alternative Peer Groups, Recovery High Schools and what we are doing to make them a reality in East Tennessee.

Watch the trailer here: http://generationfoundfilm.com/

Be sure to reserve your spot and invite your friends so we can make sure we can show this incredible film again!
